The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander [then Lieutenant] Sheldon Hoard Kinney, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. BRONSTEIN (DE-189), in action against enemy forces on the night of 29 February - 1 March 1944, in the Atlantic. Detecting the swift and unopposed approach of U-441 toward the vulnerable forces of his search group, Commander Kinney speedily maneuvered for a daring short-range attack and, skillfully directing his gunfire, scored hits on the conning tower, causing the enemy submarine to halt its approach and to submerge. After avoiding two torpedoes launched against his vessel, Commander Kinney proceeded to conduct an underwater weapons attack which inflicted extensive damage upon the U-boat and forced its return to a repair base. Subsequently, he encountered U-709 by sonar and succeeded in sinking this submarine with the assistance of two other vessels. In the final action of the night, he detected U-603 which was in a position favorable to the firing of torpedoes at a friendly aircraft carrier. Immediately launching a formidable attack with depth bombs, he forced the U-boat to defensive action, regained contact after the initial onslaught and pressed home strikes to sink the submarine despite temporary disablement of his vessel by the explosion of an acoustic torpedo in the wake. By his outstanding professional skill, courage and determined efforts throughout a four and one-half hour period, Commander Kinney was directly instrumental in saving three friendly vessels from probable torpedoing, in destroying two enemy submarines and in seriously damaging a third. CITATION:
"For exceptionally meritorious achievement in the performance of outstanding combat service against enemy forces in the Atlantic Ocean area from 29 February to 17 March 1944. While operating as part of an anti-submarine task group on the night of 29 February, the U.S.S. Bronstein engaged three German submarines during a four and one-half hour period and struck heavily and effectively throughout the concentrated action to score decisive victories. Vigilant and determined, this intrepid ship took U-441 under gunfire, successfully preventing a surface torpedo attack on two friendly escorts and, after the enemy vessel submerged, proceeded to launch an underwater weapons attack which inflicted extensive damage upon the U-boat and forced its return to a repair base. Encountering U-709 by sonar contact, the BRONSTEIN succeeded in sinking this submarine with the assistance of two other vessels and, in the final action of the night, gain sonar contact on U-603, which was making an approach on a friendly aircraft carrier. In the ensuing engagement, the BRONSTEIN skillfully maneuvered into position and sank the enemy submarine unassisted, although temporarily disabled by the explosion of an acoustic torpedo in her wake. Sixteen days later, the BRONSTEIN, together with another escort, sank a third U-boat and captured prisoners from the ill-fated submarine. Consistently maintaining a superior degree of efficiency in the performance of her assigned missions, this gallant ship established an optimum level of anti-submarine effectiveness for escort vessels during World War II. By her readiness for combat, and the skill, courage and determination of her valiant officers and men, the U.S.S. BRONSTEIN rendered invaluable service in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

USS Bronstein (DE-189) was a Cannon-class destroyer escort built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. She served in the Atlantic Ocean and provided escort service against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. She returned home at war's end with a three battle stars. She was named in honor of Ben Richard Bronstein, Assistant Surgeon, who was killed in action 28 February 1942 when Jacob Jones was sunk by an enemy submarine off Cape May, New Jersey. The ship was laid down on 26 August 1943 at Kearny, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Port Newark, New Jersey; launched on 14 November 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Dina Bronstein Kurtz, the mother of Lt.(jg.) The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Sheldon Hoard Kinney, United States Navy, for outstanding heroism aboard a United States Destroyer in 1942. When a plane crashed into the sea about two miles off the starboard quarter, Lieutenant Kinney, sighting the two occupants, realized one of the men was sustaining his injured companion with great difficulty. Facing the grim possibility of abandonment by his own ship, if a submarine were sighted, Lieutenant Kinney dove over the side, swam to the men and assumed the burden of the unconscious officer, while giving the necessary help to the other man who was fast becoming exhausted. As a result of his quick and heroic action, he undoubtedly saved the life of a severely injured pilot who might otherwise have perished. MoreHide

Two independent, coordinate commands, one in the Southwest Pacific under General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and the other in the Central, South, and North Pacific (Pacific Ocean Areas) under Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, were created early in the war. Except in the South and Southwest Pacific, each conducted its own operations with its own ground, air, and naval forces in widely separated areas. These operations required at first only a relatively small number of troops whose efforts often yielded strategic gains which cannot be measured by the size of the forces involved. Indeed, the nature of the objectivesùsmall islands, coral atolls, and jungle-bound harbors and airstrips, made the employment of large ground forces impossible and highlighted the importance of air and naval operations. Just over two hours out of port, a violent explosion lifted Sturtevant's stern from the water, but caused no apparent damage. Thinking herself under submarine attack, the destroyer dropped two depth charge barrages. About a minute after she dropped the second barrage of charges, a second detonation rocked the ship. She began to settle rapidly, but on an even keel. Minutes later, a third explosion ripped her keel apart beneath the after deckhouse. The midships section sank immediately, and the stern settled soon thereafter. The bow, curiously, remained above water for several hours. Finally, however, all but the crow's nest disappeared beneath the waves. Sturtevant went down off Key West about eight miles north of Marquesas Key. Fifteen of her crew were lost with the ship.
It was later determined that Sturtevant passed through an American-laid minefield whose existence the crew had not been notified of. Her name was struck from the Navy list on 8 May 1942.... More

USS Bronstein (DE-189) was a Cannon-class destroyer escort built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. She served in the Atlantic Ocean and provided escort service against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. She returned home at war's end with a three battle stars. She was named in honor of Ben Richard Bronstein, Assistant Surgeon, who was killed in action 28 February 1942 when Jacob Jones was sunk by an enemy submarine off Cape May, New Jersey. The ship was laid down on 26 August 1943 at Kearny, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Port Newark, New Jersey; launched on 14 November 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Dina Bronstein Kurtz, the mother of Lt.(jg.) Bronstein; and commissioned on 13 December 1943, Lt. Sheldon H. Kinney in command.
