Made two west pacs. on England. Both times went to Vietnam. Got to know NSAR station real well in the Tonkin Gulf. On one trip there, we saw all these burlap bags floating in the water. Pulled one up on deck and found they contained Rice. We must of pulled up a ton of the stuff, our fantail was loaded with it. Some said, the Viet Gong use to float it down river to feed their troops. Don't realy know if that was true, but it's possible. Any way, when we got back to Subic, we gave the rice to the orphange there in Subic. They were real happy to get it.

One of the carriers would operate from noon to midnight, another from midnight to noon, and one during daylight hours, which gave 24-hour coverage plus additional effort during daylight hours, when sorties were most effective. However at the end of May, 1972, six carriers were for a short period of time on the line at Yankee Station conducting Linebacker strikes.
The first aircraft carrier at Yankee Station was USS Kitty Hawk, which was ordered there in April 1964 for the Yankee Team missions. Kitty Hawk was joined by Ticonderoga in May and Constellation in June, two months prior to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. On one mount on the O1 level believe it was mt.52 we had a hang fire in one of the barrels.Chief gunner wanted to put a short charge in it to clear it.They thought of many ways to do it, but it ended up the way the Chief suggested in the first place. So that's what he done,put a short charge in and blew it over the side.We had visions of that gun mount blowing up.But everything worked. ... More

Never forget we were off the coast of Vietnam,the captain took the ship real close to the shore,we needed to get fire inland as far as we could get, thought we might run aground,bow faceing the shore. This was actually Class C1 weld school NavSta San Diego, CA 32 wks. Intermediate welding, Advanced welding, Nuclear components welding. Top ten advanced to Advanced welding, top five advanced to Nuclear components welding.Went to nuclear welding. First projects were 6" 3/4 in. wall thickness pipe. Dropped those two. After that they went to 3" pipe.Had a chance to make the 6" pipe up, but didn't want the Nuclear code. Settled for the high pressure code #. Thirty two weeks of welding,is a lot.

In his speech, he warned a frightened American public that the missiles on Cuba were capable of hitting Washington, D.C. or anywhere in the southeastern portion of the country, the Panama Canal, Mexico City or “as far north as Hudson Bay, Canada, and as far south as Lima, Peru.” A military confrontation appeared imminent when Kennedy told his audience that he ordered the evacuation of the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and put military units on standby. Boldly, he stated, “one path we shall never choose is the path of surrender or submission.”
Khrushchev responded by sending additional ships—possibly carrying military cargo—toward Cuba and by allowing construction at the missile sites to continue. Over the following six days, the Cuban Missile Crisis, as it is now known, brought the world to the brink of global nuclear war while the two leaders engaged in tense negotiations via telegram and letter.
Fortunately by October 28, Kennedy and Khrushchev had reached a settlement and people on both sides of the conflict breathed a collective but wary sigh of relief. The Cuban missile sites were dismantled and, in return, Kennedy agreed to close U.S. missile sites in Turkey.... More
