Had to ride out Hurricane Hugo in September 1989 underway, and we could not get back into Charleston harbor because it blew all the harbor bouys out. We had to go to Jacksonville Florida for fuel and stores until we they could get temporary markers so we could transit Charleston Harbor and get back to the Naval Station

Worked with some great Japanese civilians at the Public Works Department over the 3.5 years I wa stationed there, and they were some of the most friendly and courteous people I have ever worked with. It was definitely the best duty station of my career. I would go back in a skinny minute.

Worked with Seebee detachment as Shore Based Power Plant Technician NEC 5632. Com site electrical maintenance and repair and public works maintenance and repair of base support and housing area.
Worst Moment
While stationed at Kamiseya, Typhoon Tip came across the island of Honshu, and we were out in the middle of the typhoon with bucket truck and forklifts etc trying to clear downed trees, roof debris etc to try to keep the road access areas partially cleared for repairs after the storm. We spent many hours after the storm cleared the island in repair and cleanup work.
