In 1969, while I was stateside, I was recruited by Chief Gene Gagliardi, team leader for the US exhibition Parachute Team ?Leap Frogs.? Initially I was given a six month trial. Before I left the team in 1972 for another duty assignment I was the team leader. I qualified HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) and HAHO (High Altitude High Opening) with my highest jump with oxygen at 20,000 feet.

Best Moment
In 1969 I was ordered to SEAL Team One Cadre training. At this time SEALS were picked from UDT personnel who had distinguished themselves. Lt Jg Robert Kerry, now a seasoned Senator, was in my class. As far as I know I am the only Navy Beach Jumper to have completed this training. We were given a crash course in small unit tactics, 25 different weapon systems, patrolling, and other related combat skills. We participated in day and night live fire exercises near Niland, California in the Chocolate Mountain bombing area. We conducted various mock missions in preparation for the real thing. I used this training to instruct BJU?s who were sent to Viet Nam. When called on, we were to assist SEAL combat ops. Afterwards Seal Team One Commanding Officer gave me a letter of commendation for my participation, and encouraged me to go thru BUD's training. Since my CO had made it possible for me to receive this combat training I thought it only right that I in turn use what I had learned to train other Beach Jumpers.
Worst Moment
While a Beach Jumper I served a total of twenty eight months in Viet Nam combat operations. I usually carried the Ar-15 (first version of the M-16) rifle, and a 9mm Browning pistol. On one occasion as I was confronted by Air Force security guards at the main gate of Ton Sanutt AFB near Saigon. They were going to take my pistol from me claiming it was not on my orders. When I told them ?only over my dead body,? they backed down and let me thru. I had enough accumulated air time in helicopters to have earned the Air Medal, but who kept track we weren?t supposed to be there.
Other Memories
An event that stands out in my mind as the most worthwhile contribution we made was when we were on a search and destroy mission with a company of 3rd Marines. Earlier that morning they had taken some casualties during a recon of a Viet Namese village suspected of harboring Viet Cong. The Marines were so angry over their losses that their Company Commander ordered an air strike to annihilate the village at high noon. We learned about it and asked if we could set up our powerful PA system and have our interpreter coax the people out of the village to safety. There were four of us along with the Viet Nemeses interpreter who moved up and began to beg the women and children to leave. Just before noon when our aircraft descended on the village to pour out retribution, about seven hundred people left for safety. I was so glad. That afternoon we found ourselves in an ambush out in the open in a rice patty. Seventeen VC had engaged us with a fifty caliber machine gun and assault rifles in an ?L? shaped ambush. As soon as the incoming fire reached us everyone did as they were trained. We stood and walked toward the enemy while returning fire. We had pushed them back to the sea and they tried to make their last stand. We had light casualties compared to them. For that and other engagements they gave me a Combat Action ribbon. Most all other combatants were awarded Bronze Stars, but not BJU?s. But then ?we? were not ?really? there?

One of the carriers would operate from noon to midnight, another from midnight to noon, and one during daylight hours, which gave 24-hour coverage plus additional effort during daylight hours, when sorties were most effective. However at the end of May, 1972, six carriers were for a short period of time on the line at Yankee Station conducting Linebacker strikes.

By mid-1967, the Navy's Military Sea Transportation Service operated a fleet of 527 reactivated World War II Reserve Fleet ships and chartThis Campaign period was from 1 June 1967 to 29 January 1968. By mid-1967, the Navy's Military Sea Transportation Service operated a fleet of 527 reactivated World War II Reserve Fleet ships and chartered vessels under U.S. and foreign registry. Throughout this period, MSTS shipping carried over 40,000 U.S. and allied combat and support troops to South Vietnam. The allied requirements for transportation were passed from MSTS representatives in the ports of Danang, Chu Lai, Qui Nhon, Nha Trang, Cam Ranh, Vung Tau, Phan Rang, and Vung Ro through the MSTS office in Saigon to the MSTS Far East, headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, and finally to Commander MSTS in the United States. Many types of vessels sailed in the MSTS fleet, including converted escort carriers Core, Card, Point Cruz (T-AKV 19), and Kula Gulf (T-AKV 8), which served as aircraft ferries. Corpus Christi Bay (T-ARVH 1), formerly seaplane tender Albermarle (AV 5), operated as a helicopter repair ship for the Army. In addition to the great number of standard cargo hulls, the service operated ships that carried cargo stowed in easily handled containers and new roll-on/roll-off ships that could quickly load and unload vehicles through rear or side ports. Arriving at Danang on 1 August 1967, Bienville was the first such container vessel to reach South Vietnam. Fuel tankers included the 190,000-barrel capacity Maumee (T-AO 149), the 140,000-barrel Cache (T-AO 67), and the 30,000-barrel Chattahoochee (T-AOG 82), the latter of which was used for storage and shuttle services in-country.
MSTS also controlled as many as 16 troop transports in the Pacific during the buildup of forces in South Vietnam. A fleet of LSTs, the number of which increased from 17 to 42 by mid-1968, handled cargo shuttling along the coast. In-port lighterage and terminal duties were accomplished by the MSTS-contracted Alaska Barge and Transport Company, which operated 19 tugs and 33 barges. The total MSTS effort ensured that the 550,000-man U.S. contingent in South Vietnam was well supplied, armed, and prepared to stay in the battle against the determined enemy.
Naval Support Activity, Saigon, which the Navy activated on 17 May 1966, two days after HSAS ceased operations, was charged with providing logistic support to naval units in the II, III, and IV Corps Tactical Zones. The newly created NAVFORV directed the operations of NSA Saigon. The support activity supplied the Navy's Coastal Surveillance Force, River Patrol Force, Riverine Assault Force, and the various specialized headquarters, offices, and detachments operating in the three southern corps areas. NSA Saigon provided the commands with ammunition, weapons, and communications equipment; transported cargo and personnel; repaired and maintained ships and craft; stocked spare parts; and built bases and facilities. Finally, NSA saw to the quartering, messing, payroll, and recreational needs of the naval officers and enlisted personnel in Vietnam.
The Saigon activity developed subordinate support bases for the combat forces similar to those of NSA Danang's. NSA Saigon detachments at Qui Nhon, Nha Trang, Cam Ranh Bay, An Thoi, Cat Lo, and Vung Tau primarily served the Market Time operation, although the last two bases were home to other naval combat units as well. The concentration of the Task Force 115 headquarters, naval air units, and other large contingents at Cam Ranh Bay required greater command authority and logistic resources. As a result, in September 1967, NSA Saigon upgraded the detachment to the Naval Support Facility, Cam Ranh Bay. Detachments were also established at Can Tho (and later moved to nearby Binh Thuy), Nha Be, Vinh Long, Sa Dec, My Tho, Tan Chau, and Long Xuyen. As a third class petty officer (RD3), after successfully completing RD ?B? school I was ordered to report to the USS Implicit (MSO-455 home ported in Long Beach California. RD B School qualified me to be responsible for the electronic equipment used to send and receive messages, detect enemy planes and ships, and determine target distance. I supervised and maintained, repaired, calibrated, tuned, and adjusted all electronic equipment used aboard the vessel.

I had been part of the ships crew when the ship prepared for another Far Eastern deployment, this time in support of the American advisory effort in South Vietnam. Sailing 2 January 1962 for this embattled country, Implicit first participated in SEATO maneuvers and then moved to various ports in South Vietnam to assist in training officers and men in their struggle against communist subversion. We returned to Long Beach from South Vietnam 17 August 1962. Implicit resumed a schedule of underway training and fleet exercises out of Long Beach until our next deployment, sailing with our division (three other MSO?s) 3 January 1964. Since I had qualified as a Junior Officer of the Deck, I along with two commissioned officers took turns commanding the ship from the bridge giving orders for steerage, speed, and maneuvers in and out of ports. Stopping at Guam and Midway Island en route, we arrived off Formosa (Chinese name for Taiwan) for mine-warfare exercises in March. In April we patrolled the coast of Viet Nam searching suspicious boats looking for Viet Cong arms. Then in May we returned to the Formosa Strait for a second operation, in which the ship acted under a Chinese Nationalist division commander in a demonstration of cooperation and smooth combined operations. Following her second SEATO exercise in the Pacific, Implicit resumed to Long Beach 28 July 1964 for a yard overhaul and readiness tactics and training along the coast of California. I was promoted to First Class Petty Officer.

In his speech, he warned a frightened American public that the missiles on Cuba were capable of hitting Washington, D.C. or anywhere in the southeastern portion of the country, the Panama Canal, Mexico City or “as far north as Hudson Bay, Canada, and as far south as Lima, Peru.” A military confrontation appeared imminent when Kennedy told his audience that he ordered the evacuation of the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and put military units on standby. Boldly, he stated, “one path we shall never choose is the path of surrender or submission.”
Khrushchev responded by sending additional ships—possibly carrying military cargo—toward Cuba and by allowing construction at the missile sites to continue. Over the following six days, the Cuban Missile Crisis, as it is now known, brought the world to the brink of global nuclear war while the two leaders engaged in tense negotiations via telegram and letter.
Fortunately by October 28, Kennedy and Khrushchev had reached a settlement and people on both sides of the conflict breathed a collective but wary sigh of relief. The Cuban missile sites were dismantled and, in return, Kennedy agreed to close U.S. missile sites in Turkey.... More

I went aboard as a seamen apprentice and left as a Third Class Petty Officer (RD3) during which I made four western pacific deployments to the Far East in 1956, 1957, 1958, and 1959. The Cushing served as plane guard and joined in hunter-killer exercises with TF 77. Aboard the Cushing we patrolled in the Taiwan Straits when China was fighting to regain Quemoy and Matsu Islands, and on one occasion remained on station, at sea, for 78 consecutive days. The patrol took us inside the international waters of China, and earned us a number of ?serious warnings.? Answering a distress call from a Norwegian freighter we sailed within a mile of some of China?s islands and was intercepted by four Chinese gun boats. They hoisted international flags telling us ?crew safe make haste home?. Battle ready we turned and headed back into international waters. We visited various ports strengthening national ties in the President Dwight D. Eisenhower's "People to People" program. One of those port calls took us across the equator to Australia and New Zealand. That?s when I painfully became a ?Shellback.? While "stateside" we operated along the west coast in antisubmarine and antiaircraft warfare exercises, and midshipmen and reserve training. Out to sea for two weeks and then back to Long Beach harbor where we usually moored to a buoy and took liberty boats ashore.
