The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION to
For meritorious service while engaged in combat operations against the enemy in North Vietnam, from 10 April to 30 November 1972. Throughout this period, USS LONG BEACH continually exhibited outstanding professionalism while providing coordination of search and rescue operations, control of combat air patrol and Anti-Air Warfare Force defense in the Gulf of Tonkin. She also provided unremitting support in extensive carrier and SEVENTH Air Force "Linebacker" operations, contributing materially to the success of the air war in North Vietnam. While acting in support of these major operations, LONG BEACH controlled combat air patrol aircraft in the successful interception and subsequent destruction of nine enemy MIG aircraft and the coordination of numerous successful search and rescue operations. The ship's coordination with search and rescue forces resulted in the successful recovery of fourteen downed U. S. Naval and Air Force aviators. By their outstanding professionalism, teamwork and determined devotion to duty, the officers and men of USS LONG BEACH earned the highest respect of Task Force SEVENTY -SEVEN and SEVENTH Air Force aviators, thereby reflecting great credit upon themselves and their ship and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

"For meritorious service while attached to and serving in USS BERKELEY (DDG-15) as Gunnery Liaison Officer from 21 July to 11 Dec¬ember 1968 during combat operations against the enemy. Warrant Officer VOLLMAR trained and coordinated the 'efforts of the gunnery team which won accolades for its accurate gunfire. It was largely through his professional experience and leadership that BERKELEY was able to prevent any major fire control problems and continue its assigned missions.
His cool judgment on many occasions enabled the gunnery team to continue its mission even under adverse conditions. Warrant Officer VOLLMAR's inspirational leadership, professionalism and devotion to duty reflected, great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.'" ,

Description Yankee Station was a point in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam used by the U.S. Navy aircraft carriers of Task Force 77 to launch strikes in the Vietnam War. While its official designation Yankee Station was a point in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam used by the U.S. Navy aircraft carriers of Task Force 77 to launch strikes in the Vietnam War. While its official designation was "Point Yankee," it was universally referred to as Yankee Station. Carriers conducting air operations at Yankee Station were said to be "on the line" and statistical summaries were based on days on the line.
The name derived from it being the geographic reference point "Y", pronounced "Yankee" in the NATO phonetic alphabet. In turn the term Point Yankee derived from the launch point for "Yankee Team" aerial reconnaissance missions over Laos conducted in 1964. It was located about 190 km due east of Dong Hoi, at 17° 30' N and 108° 30' E.
During the two periods of sustained air operations against North Vietnam (March 2, 1965-October 31, 1968 and March 30, 1972-December 29, 1972) there were normally three carriers on the line, each conducting air operations for twelve hours, then off for twelve hours. One of the carriers would operate from noon to midnight, another from midnight to noon, and one during daylight hours, which gave 24-hour coverage plus additional effort during daylight hours, when sorties were most effective. However at the end of May, 1972, six carriers were for a short period of time on the line at Yankee Station conducting Linebacker strikes.
The first aircraft carrier at Yankee Station was USS Kitty Hawk, which was ordered there in April 1964 for the Yankee Team missions. Kitty Hawk was joined by Ticonderoga in May and Constellation in June, two months prior to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Ticonderoga and Constellation launched the first bombing missions from Yankee Station on August 5, 1964. Constellation was also the last carrier conducting operations at Yankee Station on August 15, 1973. USS Forrestal suffered a major accident while at Yankee Station when a series of fires and explosions on her deck killed 134 men and injured another 161.

Chief Petty Officer VOLLMAR was responsible for the immediate readiness of this battery. He designed and directed an origi¬nal system of continuous checks designed to expeditiously detect defi¬ciencies as occurring and their correction. The battery, under his super¬vision, was ready for instant response at all times while on station.
This state of readiness of a TALOS battery over a significant period of time was a direct tribute to his efforts. Through his skill, leadership and devotion to duty, Chief Petty Officer VOLLMAR contributed significant¬ly and directly to the accomplishment of the ship's mission. His perform¬ance reflected great credit upon himself and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
