OperatiThe United Nations authorized an international force – the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) – with a mandate to help the Afghans maintain security in Kabul and surrounding areas. Operating under U.S. General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., ISAF included soldiers from 46 countries, with U.S. troops making up about half its force. ISAF was initially established as a stabilization force by the UN Security Council on 20 December 2001, to secure Kabul. Its mandate did not extend beyond this area for the first few years. On 11 August 2003, NATO assumed political command and coordination of ISAF. On 31 July 2006, ISAF assumed command of the south of the country, and by 5 October 2006, of the east.
Following a Loya jirga, tribal leaders and former exiles established an interim government in Kabul under Hamid Karzai. U.S. forces established their main base at Bagram airbase just north of Kabul. Kandahar airport also became an important U.S. base. Outposts were established in eastern provinces to hunt for Taliban and al-Qaeda fugitives.... More
People You Remember
Bee Rose / Jay Waite / LT Ingersoll / LT Wise and the ever infamous Dr. James Balz (surgeon).
Memories Lots of late nights and early mornings when we started doing flight ops in support of the mission. ILots of late nights and early mornings when we started doing flight ops in support of the mission. It was a real bummer for the crew when the admiral told us all we had already turned around and to deal with it. This wound up being one of the longest deployments in U.S. history for a carrier. 10 months!... More
Best Moment
Given the opportunity to work in medical and begin what would be a love of medicine and a motivation to help my shipmates.
Worst Moment
When I first drew blood on one of the HM's practicing, there was blood everywhere.
Chain of Command
HMC Rock was my chain of command; there was the XO and CO but no way can I remember those names now. I do remember that the XO drove a sweet tan colored 1960's mustang in pristine condition.
Other Memories
Before going into medical I used to walk the waterfront checking tending lines on the tugs. Man was it cold out on the water with no place to duck away. My last name at the command was HUDGINS
Best Friends
Weatherspoon, she was a great gal. Ran into her once about 19 years ago at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Best Moment
Winning the Cheerio! We were an awsome company.
Worst Moment
Watching everyone leave while I was left on hold awaiting orders.
Other Memories
Hearing the song 'Lean on Me' during church services always had everyone in tears and hoping that we could all make it through boot camp. Most of us did thank goodness.
