Best Moment
My first WestPac - 9 1/2 months. Pulling out to sea off San Francisco and having the CO come on the 1MC with news that we were going to meet the Ranger Battlegroup off San Diego and then proceed down off the coast of Nicaragua. Little did we know we'd be bouncing between the Battlegroup and Rodman Naval Base Panama Canal Zone and for 30 days picking up food, fuel, parts and people and delivering them to the fleet every 3rd day.
Another fun moment - Leaving Pearl Harbor with the AE in our Battlegroup. There was a Russian Trawler outside the harbor. The CO got with the CO of the AE and we did a full power run in a single file. Once we got over the horizon we went one direction and the AE went another direction so the Trawler couldn't follow us back to the fleet. Needless to say, a couple days later, a Russian "Bear" bomber overflew the Battlegroup with a single F14 tucked under each wing like it was an attached missile.
Spent Christmas in Aqaba Jordan. Went with a tour group to the ancient city of Petra. That was cool! The 3 1/2 mile walk into the place was all downhill the walk out, uphill. I should have rented a camel...
