Description
For service in the Western Pacific in support of forces fighting Imperial Japan in WWII.
Other Memories
Served as battalion commander. The Navy kept some of us "Golden Thirteen," the first 13 black officers in history at Great Lakes because they didn't know what to do with us yet.
Best Moment
Starting tackle for Great Lakes Bluejackets, one of the best football teams in the country, finishing 10-2 against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Team was 9-1 with me as a starter, including a 19-14 victory over Notre Dame. We were 40-point underdogs, as the Irish had won 9 in a row to that point. The base CO gave us a 72-hour pass for that win!
Worst Moment
Getting put on report. I refused an order by my chief to discipline a black recruit for having a cigarette in his jumper pocket. He wanted me to make him eat it. I refused, and had to stand in front of the Captain. The Captain, after hearing my reasoning, didn't punish me.
Other Memories
Company exercise leader. I joined the Navy primarily because I didn't want to get dirty and muddy, but found out that Great Lakes was a lot of marching!
ENS Frank Sublett
I was XO. ENS Sublett was CO.
