Worst Moment
Worst duty in my career. This command seemed like the cemetery for retirement where most disregarded military protocal and majority of the senior personnel were in their twilight tour for retirement. So in keeping my pride as a member of the US Navy and complying with directives I found myself doing this alone with senior management telling me I would pay with negative evaluations somehow because I would not play in the role of the status quo. I requested to terminate my shore duty assignment and return to sea duty. I questioned my transfer evaluations I received up the chain of command and with no change of the result, it remained. I still hold the maintenance officer, the executive officer, and the commanding officer for not listening why this derogatory remark was written on my evaluation when they did not witness what actually happened at NAS El Centro while TAD with squadron aircraft. After securing aircraft for the night shift had my Co-Chief to check the line. All was secured. The following morning one aircraft had no wheel chocks. Found to be a detachment of A7 Corsairs helped themselves to a set. Stupidity just to get at me for complying with standing orders.

Just to say that I think often of this incident back in November 16, 1973 on a detachment with two C2s in Crete. We had aircraft 25 and 21. We had been there supporting the carriers in the Med. One morning going to work after leaving the hotel downtown. The detachment was to fly aircraft 25 to the Independence and aircraft 21 to Athens. Our det Chief asked me if I wanted to go home on aircraft 25 which was scheduled for maintenance and needed to go back to Naples, Italy. I did not think of it long to say no because I did not want to go back to the hotel and get my belongings. My counterpart Tom Murphy said he would go as he was a newly wed. Just prior to this detachment we had gotten together at his home for dinner to meet the new bride. So both flights leaving at the same time were on the runway. Aircraft 25 took off first with 4 crewman and passengers. Aircraft 21 followed. Then the unexpected the call from 25 that it was going down into the bay. All passengers and one crewman lost their lives. The pilot, co-pilot and the the plane captain survived. The loadmaster Tom Murphy lost his life. To this day I think of this and can not make ends to put aside. Why? The other part of this incident was that the night before we were out in town together with other shipmates from the detachment and this young man 18 years of age or so walking by himself came up to our group. We chatted and then we took him into out group. He had just come home from leave after basic and was reporting to the USS Independence. Did not get a chance in life he was onboard aircraft 25. Life is fragile in an instance. May they rest in peace.

Other Memories
At sea on three different carriers: on the USS Constellation CVA64 for 6 months, USS Ranger CVA61 for 8 months, USS Enterprise CVAN65 for 10 months while assigned to VA196 for 3 1/2 years. Visited numerous times the Phillipines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sesabo, and Yokosuka, Japan. Numerous line period up to 60 days. For me it was an adventure, excitement, a learning experience, even with the racist comments I had to endure, and sad of the outcome of War. Death. I believe that it molded me for a career in the Navy for the span of 26 years. The A6 Intruder was new to the fleet, other base aircraft the A3, the P2 were being relocated soon after. I transferred after my 3 year tour with VA196 and continued my Navy career and returned to Whidbey Is in 1990 assigned to AIMD then VAQ140. I retired in 1994 the A6s were being retired, P3s were being assigned to Whidbey eventually P8s to be. In with the new, out with old, and revolves back to in with the new.

In May, Giant Slingshot and Sea Tiger became Tran Hung Dao II and Tran Hung Dao VII. The allied navies also launched Operation Blue Shark, a seven-month effort designed to strike at the Viet Cong command, communication, and logistics network (or infrastructure) in the mangrove swamps at the mouth of the Mekong River system, on the river islands, and along the river banks all the way to the Cambodian border. Coastal Surveillance Force PCFs landed SEALs and LDNN for swift, deadly attacks on the usually surprised enemy. The units often followed up on intelligence gathered by Naval Intelligence Liaison Officers (NILO) assigned to many of South Vietnam's provinces and operational areas.
Coinciding with the turnover of river and coastal fighting vessels in 1969 and 1970, the Navy transferred many of the bases from which they operated. The first change of command occurred at My Tho in November 1969. Then, in the last three months of 1970, COMNAVFORV placed the Phu Cuong, Long Binh, Kien An, Chau Doc, Tan Chau, and Ha Tien Operating Bases under Vietnamese control. The transfer of Sa Dec and Chu Lai the following spring completed the process. During this same period, the Vietnamese Navy took over the six Advanced Tactical Support Bases established on the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay Rivers for the Giant Slingshot operation and two more on the Cua Viet River in I Corps. In addition, the allied naval service assumed control of the harbor defense posts of the Stable Door effort, the three existing coastal radar sites, and Market Time's coastal surveillance centers.
Meanwhile, the Navy deployed Seabee detachments throughout South Vietnam to construct logistic facilities at new and existing bases. Once the Seabees completed this work and U.S. leaders felt the Vietnamese could totally support their combat units, the Americans transferred the bases to their allies. In this manner, beginning in the spring of 1971, Rear Admiral Robert S. Salzer, the new COMNAVFORV, relinquished control of Cat Lo and An Thoi, two of seven primary Logistic Support Bases that provided allied naval forces with major vessel overhauls and other supply assistance. The allied navies also launched Operation Blue Shark, a seven-month effort designed to strike at the Viet Cong command, communication, and logistics network (or infrastructure) in the mangrove swamps at the mouth of the Mekong River system, on the river islands, and along the river banks all the way to the Cambodian border. Coastal Surveillance Force PCFs landed SEALs and LDNN for swift, deadly attacks on the usually surprised enemy. The units often followed up on intelligence gathered by Naval Intelligence Liaison Officers (NILO) assigned to many of South Vietnam's provinces and operational areas.
Coinciding with the turnover of river and coastal fighting vessels in 1969 and 1970, the Navy transferred many of the bases from which they operated. The first change of command occurred at My Tho in November 1969. Then, in the last three months of 1970, COMNAVFORV placed the Phu Cuong, Long Binh, Kien An, Chau Doc, Tan Chau, and Ha Tien Operating Bases under Vietnamese control. The transfer of Sa Dec and Chu Lai the following spring completed the process. During this same period, the Vietnamese Navy took over the six Advanced Tactical Support Bases established on the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay Rivers for the Giant Slingshot operation and two more on the Cua Viet River in I Corps. In addition, the allied naval service assumed control of the harbor defense posts of the Stable Door effort, the three existing coastal radar sites, and Market Time's coastal surveillance centers.
Meanwhile, the Navy deployed Seabee detachments throughout South Vietnam to construct logistic facilities at new and existing bases. Once the Seabees completed this work and U.S. leaders felt the Vietnamese could totally support their combat units, the Americans transferred the bases to their allies. In this manner, beginning in the spring of 1971, Rear Admiral Robert S. Salzer, the new COMNAVFORV, relinquished control of Cat Lo and An Thoi, two of seven primary Logistic Support Bases that provided allied naval forces with major vessel overhauls and other supply assistance. In the same period, the Vietnamese took charge of Ben Luc and Rach Soi, two secondary or Intermediate Support Bases. Worst duty in my career. This command seemed like the cemetery for retirement where most disregarded military protocal and majority of the senior personnel were in their twilight tour for retirement. So in keeping my pride as a member of the US Navy and complying with directives I found myself doing this alone with senior management telling me I would pay with negative evaluations somehow because I would not play in the role of the status quo. I requested to terminate my shore duty assignment and return to sea duty. I questioned my transfer evaluations I received up the chain of command and with no change of the result, it remained. I still hold the maintenance officer, the executive officer, and the commanding officer for not listening why this derogatory remark was written on my evaluation when they did not witness what actually happened at NAS El Centro while TAD with squadron aircraft. After securing aircraft for the night shift had my Co-Chief to check the line. All was secured. The following morning one aircraft had no wheel chocks. Found to be a detachment of A7 Corsairs helped themselves to a set. Stupidity just to get at me for complying with standing orders.
