The ex-USS Maricopa County became the HQ 501 back in 1962. I remember the ship from my tour in 1970/71. It did not make it out to freedom at the close of the war and was captured by the communists. Ironically I have lived in Maricopa County for nearly 30 years. Phoenix is the county seat along with being the state capitol.
