Reflections on PO1 Durity's
US Navy Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE NAVY.
I had completed my first year of college in Washington DC and was spending the summer with my family in St Croix USVI. We took a tour of the Navy ship that was in port that was having an open house. This would be a major influence in my decision not to return to college and enlist in the Navy.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
I retired from the Navy after completing 20 years of service. It was time to move on to a new chapter of my life and make room for the next generation.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
Operation Swamp Fox. in St. Thomas US Virgin Island
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite and fondest memories will be Recruit Training Command (RTC) Orlando, Florida. My least favorite will be Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA), Norfolk, Virginia.
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
I am a member of American Veterans (AMVETS) Virginia Post 69. I am currently the 2nd Vice Commander. a member of Fleet Reserve Association (FRA). I also served on the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organization (HRCVO).
