Last Known Activity

On 27 May 1945, USS Braine (DD-630) was hit in quick succession by two suicide planes. The first hit forward seriously damaged the bridge, and the second hit amidships blew number two funnel overboard and demolished the amidships superstructure. Braine retired to Kerama Retto, Ryukyu Islands, for emergency repairs.

CCS Ezzell died as a result of wounds. It is not certain whether these wounds were received as a direct result of the attack or if they were sustained while he attempted to rescue his shipmates. He was first buried in Isom Cemetery, Ryukus Island, Okinawa. In 1949, his remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Navy Commendation Ribbon
For outstanding conduct while serving aboard a United States Destroyer engaged in operations against the Japanese held Marianas Islands. When his ship was hit by enemy fire and personnel were injured, disregarding his own safety, he administered first aid to the wounded and withdrew them to safety. His initiative, coolness, and quick thinking were in keeping with the highest traditions of the naval service.
