Last Known Activity

As the assault troops opened the Amphibious Battle of Gela on 10 July 1943, USS Maddox (DD-622)
was on antisubmarine patrol offshore. Steaming alone, the destroyer was attacked by a German bomber of KG 54. One of the bombs exploded Maddox's aft magazine, causing the ship to roll over and sink within two minutes. S2c Anuszewski was among the men listed as missing in action and later declared dead.
