S1c Haase was stationed aboard the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was killed in action and buried at the Nuuanu Cemetery in Oahu, but later reinterred at the National Cemetery of the Pacific.
