BM2 Baack was stationed aboard the USS Mississippi (BB-41). He was at his duty station on November 20, 1943 during a battle with the Japanese in the Number 2 gun turret. When the crew went to re-load it after it was fired, they had inserted the projectile into the breech and were loading the powder charge when a spark from the residue of the previous round ignited the powder new powder charge.  The explosion killed everyone in the turret and they were buried at sea.
