Excerpt from "Memoirs of a Naval Aviator's Career"

Phase X: Heading Home... Praise the Lord!

CDR William E. Thomas USN Retired

While stationed in Hawaii I had made 68 flights, 43 of which were combat missions.  While in the Aleutian Islands I logged 54 flights, 26 of which were combat missions, and in Guadalcanal area I logged 80 flights, 48 of which were combat missions.  In total my flights numbered 202, plus about 30 test flights, or small single engine plane flights.  I logged a total of 117 flights designated "In combat with the enemy."  My log book shows current flying experience as 1,720 hours.  I was pleased to have been certified as qualified to act as Patrol Plane Commander in three different airplanes, capable of flying any of them to any destination in the world.
