CDR Matthew John Bouterse was born near Pensacola, FL on June 9, 1914 of his parents Matthew John Bouterse and Reina (Rijskamp) Bouterse. He graduated Mount Dora High School in 1932 and went on to attend the University of FL and then Stetson where he obtained a Bachelors degree. He continued his education at the Eastern Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA where he received a Master of Divinity degree. He married Virginia Lee Hargis on December 25, 1938 and received his first ordained call to the First Baptist Church of Carlisle, KY. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 he joined the United States Navy as a Chaplain. His first assignment was on the Cruiser U.S.S. Astoria and he was wounded when it was sunk at the Battle of Savo Island in late 1942. He received numerous medals and commendations in recognition of his service in the Pacific and European theaters including the Purple Heart. He went on to serve 22 years in the Navy before retiring in 1963 with the rank of Commander to Oceanside, CA. He earned a M.A. from San Diego State University while pastor at the Carlsbad Union Church in Carlsbad, CA. In 1969 he returned to Central Florida where he served as interim, then full-time pastor at the Umatilla First Baptist Church and interim pastor at Eustis First Baptist Church. He also served as a missionary in Hong Kong and Guam.
