 Additional Information
Last Known Activity

The USS Kimberly (DD-521) entered the Okinawa campaign and on March 26, 1945, the ship was attacked by two Kamikazes -- Japanese "Val" dive-bombers. They shot down one, but the other, despite numerous hits and in flames, continued and crashed into the after-gun mounts, killing four men and wounding 57. Tony served in one of the after-gun mounts and was killed in the explosion.

Although these facts are presented, Anthony's remains were never recovered and his death listed as "lost at sea".

Bronze Star citation:
Although fully aware that the onrushing hostile plane would crash near him, Banach resolutely remained at his station and aided in maintaining a steady stream of anti-aircraft fire against the suicide attacker. His fearless determination and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death were inspiring to those with whom he served and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
