Last Known Activity
Captain James Richard Hansen, U.S. Navy (Ret.)
Awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with "V"
two Purple Hearts and a Presidential Unit Citation

Navy Captain James Hansen graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy, in 1936, where he was active in athletics. He saw action in the Pacific Theater during World War II and in the Korean War in 1953. Both times he earned medals. In December 1941 he was on board the USS Conyngham at Pearl Harbor during the attack. For action in the Kula Gulf, New Georgia, in October, 1943, Captain Hansen was commended by Admiral W. F. Halsey and awarded a Silver Star. He received the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in the torpedoing of the USS Chevalier. After duty under instruction at the Fleet Sonar School, he commanded the USS Morrison, which was sunk by the enemy in May, 1945. During this action Captain Hansen was awarded the Navy Cross, the nation's second highest award for "extraordinary heroism." He was also awarded a gold star in lieu of a second Purple Heart for wounds received in this action along with the Legion of Merit and combat "V".

Then Commander Hansen, in command of the USS Higbee, evacuated the last foreign nationals from Chefoo China during 1950 as the Chinese Communists Armies were entering the City. For action during the Korean War, in 1953 with the USS Manchester, he received a letter of commendation also with combat "V."

Lincoln Evening Journal from Lincoln, Nebraska. Capt. Hansen Retiring Naval Science Post at NU.

Capt. James R. Hansen, professor of Naval Science at the University of Nebraska, will retire in June after 25 years of naval duty. No successor has been named. The departure of Hansen creates a clean sweep of military professors leaving the University (June 1961).

Hansen, a 1936 U. S. Naval Academy graduate, has been at the University since August, 1958. He has been decorated by the Navy with almost every distinguished wartime honor. He plans to live in Los Angeles tentatively, seeking civilian employment.
