My uncle was attached to CinCPacFlt as an RM1C before Pearl and was promoted to Chief after Pearl.  Temporarily assigned to the sub-base while the USS Pennsylvania was being refitted.  I was too little to ask for details and he didn't readily talk about the war so more detail is lacking.  He lived to 98, but Alzheimer's got to him at 80.
According to family lore, John was the one who initiated the phrase 'this is a drill, this is a drill' and 'this is not a drill, this is not a drill',  as prior to this standard the claxon would sound with an 'all hands man your battle/fire stations'.
