Arthur Marshall Afdahl, age 100 of Dublin, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center.
Art was born in Douglas, North Dakota on July 29, 1914 to Pauline and Julius Afdahl. He attended school in Ryder, North Dakota graduating in 1933.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1933 to 1937. He rose quickly in rank and was assigned to the U.S.S. Indianapolis. After his discharge from the Navy he attended technical school and taught electrical maintenance for two years. In 1942, he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during World War II on the U.S.S. Birmingham. In October, 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, he was injured in an explosion as his ship rendered aid to the U.S.S. Princeton. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries, as well as the Victory Medal, the Bronze Star and service medals for the Philippine Liberation and serving in the European-African-Middle East theater.
In 1952, he began his career with the Veterans Administration in Minot, North Dakota. He transferred to Chicago, then to Big Spring, Texas, and eventually to Dublin, Georgia in 1960 where he served as the Chief of Engineering at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center from 1960 to 1976. He was a member of the American Legion for 68 years. He retired in 1977 and made his home in Panama City, Florida for 28 years before returning to Dublin in 2006.
Art loved to walk. His love for walking began in Chicago, Illinois in 1952. He walked almost every day for 62 years. His walking path eventually moved from the roads around his home to the halls of the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center where he spent the last four years of his life close to both his family in Dublin and the veterans at the VA with whom he shared a special bond of camaraderie and love.
