FC/2c James Edward BAGLEY
USS Samuel N. Moore DD-747
Korean War

James Edward Bagley was born September 21, 1930, in Waterloo, Iowa. He was the third child of William Franklin and Margaret (Craig) Bagley. Jim graduated in 1948 from Albia Community High School, having been active in football and track. At 17, Jim lied about his age to enlist in the Navy and follow in his brother Bill’s footsteps, but his mother foiled his plans. He went on to enlist in 1948 and served in combat during the Korean War. From 1956 until 1963, Jim served as a highway patrolman for the State of Iowa.

His lifelong commitment to the medical field began when Jim worked as a psychiatric aide in the VA hospital in Knoxville, Iowa. He then moved on to several leadership positions. Jim served as an administrator for Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls, Iowa (1963-1968); Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa (1968-1983); and Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona (1983-1989). Jim was employed in interim positions at Trinity Memorial and St. Mary’s Hill before moving to Portland, Oregon. He served as CEO of Mount St. Joseph Residential and Long Term Care Facility prior to retiring due to poor health in 1996.
