Robert Francis Bernard was born October 21, 1916 in Gilbertville, son of Albert W. and Vestina A. Hopper Bernard. He married Alice L. Keiderling December 27, 1939 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Waterloo. She died in March of 1975. He married Elner Kelling Clapp on August 8, 1987 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Robert owned and operated B&B Auto Repair in
for 59 years, retiring in 2007. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Cabot in the South Pacific during WWII.
