A Naval Aviator attached to Squadron VF-9, nicknamed the “Cat o’ Nines.” While conducting flight operations off Kahului, Hawaii, his plane went down, was considered “unrecoverable” and Ensign Ackley’s body was never recovered. He was listed as missing - presumed dead.
