 Additional Information
Last Known Activity
At the invasion of Iwo Jima on 17 February 1945, while shelling enemy positions in support of Underwater Demolition Team swimmers, the ship was heavily damaged by Japanese counter-fire. Lawrence was passing 40mm Ammunition to the gun captain when on of those Japanese rounds struck the ammunition locker he was working from and killed. The ship was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
