Hospital Corpsman Third Class Gayle was attached to Company H, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was killed while tending his wounded comrades on May 24, 1951 from head wounds received at "Horseshoe Ridge" near Hwachon, South Korea.
