Lieutenant Commander Coffman was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron 24, aboard the aircraft carrier USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47). On April 20, 1951, while on a combat mission over North Korea, his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and crashed into the sea. He was unable to eject.

(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Commander Emory Ronald Coffman (NSN: 0-795994), United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit (Posthumously) for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron TWENTY-FOUR (VF-24), embarked in U.S.S. PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47), in action against enemy forces in Korea from 15 September 1950 to 18 April 1951.
