Last Known Activity
USS Grayling SS-209 was on her 8th war patrol. After successfully attacking and sinking a Japanese vessel on 27 August 1943, she was not heard from again. The Japanese ship "Hokuan Maru" reported sighting a submerged submarine on 9 September 1943 west of Luzon. The Hokuan Maru reported that it collided with/rammed the submarine and sank it.

James Hanger Wilson was not married. He was the 5th child of Frank Clark Wilson and Nell (Hanger) Wilson of West Virginia. They lived in Denver, Colorado at the time of James loss.
