Ens. Howell served with the VF-4 Fighter Squadron aboard the U.S.S. Boxer (CV-21), Carrier Air Group 2, flying an F4U-4 (BU 81276).

He was the 3rd loss of the U.S.S. Boxer on this patrol off the Korean coast. He was flying an F4U that was shot down near Uijongbu on 29 September 1950.

He was seen to parachute safely, but was captured by the North Koreans, beaten severely, and shot to death by his captors.

Note: His death is alternatively listed as 2 October 1950.
