The Navy Department regrets to inform you that your son, Patrick Angel Alterice, Signalman, Third Class, is missing following action in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country.  The Department appreciate your great anxiety but details (are) not now available and delay in receipt thereof must necessarily be expected to prevent possible aid to our enemies.  Please do not divulge the name of his ship or station.

PATRICK A. "Bobby" ALTERICE, Signalman third class, age 19, has been officially listed as dead by the Navy Department, according to word received here by the family, Thursday, December 28, 1943.  He was the son of Mrs. Amanda ALTERICE and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hanel, Sr.  It is presumed the Roscoe sailor lost his life when the SS John L. Motley was sunk during the attack on Bari, Italy, December 2, 1943.
