Last Known Activity

James M. Coney Sr., 77, son of David and Jesse Coney, was born Aug. 21, 1924, at Yowell, Texas. He died Aug. 21, 2001, at Houston after a brief illness of Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Mr. Coney served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from January 1943 and was attached to the Battleship New Jersey BB62 commissioned
May 23, 1943, serving in the Pacific Theatre attached to Task Force 52. He took part in the following missions: Marshall Island opera-tions, Asiatic Pacific raids, Hollondia operations, Mariannas Turkey Shoot, Carolina Islands operations, Leyte Gulf opera-tions, Iwo Jima operations, Okinawa operations, China Sea operations, raids of North Japan and occupation of Tokyo Bay.

He was honorably discharged April 1946 and re-enlisted in the volunteer reserves from 1954 to 1958, attached to NAS Dallas during the Korean War.

In his return to civilian life, he married Martha G. Baumgardner of
Dallas, Texas, Feb. 14, 1948. He enjoyed writing and flower gardening with his wife, horse-back riding with his family, play-ing league games and flying small personal aircraft.

He went to college and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
May 13, 1960. He pastored churches in several counties across south Missouri. He was involved in missions abroad. He served on the board of directors of Life Giving Outreach Ministries. As part of his lifelong ministry, he served in Haiti, Israel and Mexico as well at the United States.
