I was a pilot in his detachment, I was flying with the Fire Team when his helicopter crashed. Both helos had just rearmed and refueled at the Ca Mau airstrip, and had to approach our revetment over a pond. I landed in the revetment first, and his bird was following when an engine failure caused his helo to crash, coming to rest on its left side. Walt was in the left gunner's seat, and must have been thrown out before the helo settled on top of him. All the fuel caught fire, burning on the water as well as the helo, and the ammunition was cooking off, making it impossible for any of us to get to the helo to search for him, even though his pilot tried, and had to be pulled away. He was about eight years older than most of us, and we tended to look up to him as an older brother. I'm sorry I didn't know him better, but we flew in different helos.
