LIGHTERAGE SECTION
NAVSUPACT DANANG / COMNAVFORV

The February 1969 NAVFORV History contains the following entry regarding two rocket attacks on the Navy facilities at Danang Harbor, north of the Marble Mountain Airfield:

On 27 February, two enemy 122mm rounds slammed into the NAVSUPPACT, Danag covered storage area causing extensive damage, including wounds sustained by 13 Navy men. More rockets were lobbed at the Danang bridge loading ramp during a rocket barrage on the 27th, destroying LCU-1500 and YFU-78. LCU-1500 received a direct hit by a rocket of unknown size. Ammunition on the LCU was detonated and an explosion occurred with fire spreading to the nearby YFU. Another craft, LCU-1614, sustained minor damage by shrapnel. Total U.S. Navy personel casualties were reported at 22 Navy men killed and 38 wounded.

Three sailors died in the first attack on the covered storage area, about 6 kilometers north of MMAF. The second attack probably would have caused as few casualties except for the lucky hit on LCU-1500, which was fully laden with munitions for transport to Dong Ha in Quang Tri Province. It was mostly the secondary explosions and fires which killed 22 sailors aboard LCU-1500, YFU-78 and NSA Danang.
