 Additional Information
Last Known Activity
Donald was the son of Harry and Dora Miller Labolle and spent his youth in Kent WA. He joined the National Guard, where he served for several years until enlisting on Sept. 12, 1942 in the US Naval Reserves.

On June 12, 1943, he came aboard the USS Helena (CL-50), a light Naval Cruiser. He was a Motor Machinist's Mate 2nd Class. On July 6, 1943, the Helena was engaged in a Soloman Islands Campaign, The Battle of Kula Gulf.

With 900 men aboard, the men engaged the Japanese, destroying or helping destroy four enemy ships. It was hit by a torpedo, then two more torpedoes before sinking. Many men were rescued that day and the following days. Sadly, Donald and 168 other men perished. He was killed in action and his body not recovered.

Donald Labolle was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, The Philippines.
