Last Known Activity

Seaman/1c Laverne Austin was Killed in Action on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor.  He was stationed aboard the USS Arizona BB39. 

His father received a telegram Dec 20. informing that his son was missing. He  had been in the navy just a year, the day of the attack. He was born in Perryville, NY and attended Perryville grade school and Cazenovia central school where he was a senior when he joined the navy.

He went to Newport, R.I. for six weeks Recruit Training, He was home to visit his father, who is a former service man in January.of 1941 S1c Austin was then was sent to San Diego  for some training in avaiation schools and in June 1941 was sent to Hawaii. He arived in Hawaii in July 1941 and was on the USS Nevada for about 4 days. Then to his final command the USS Arizona. 

He was declared missing in Dec 7, 1941.
