Last Known Activity

Herbert Joseph Poindexter, Jr joined the US Navy from Florida and was serving aboard the USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was declared missing in action, his remains among those commingled with others in a mass grave.

Between June and November 2015, DPAA personnel exhumed the USS Oklahoma Unknown remains from the Punchbowl for analysis.

To identify Poindexter’s remains, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis. Additionally, the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis.

His remains will be buried in his hometown in June 2019.
