Last Known Activity

Radioman Petty Officer Second Class Walter Backman was Killed in Action on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor.  He was stationed aboard the USS Oklahoma BB-37.

His remains were never Identified but is listed as one of the approximately 390 unknowns from the USS Oklahoma that have been buried in mass graves at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Efforts in 2016 and beyond are currently underway to Identify these remains. 

He Remains were Identified as recovered on Aug 7th, 2017. 

Interment services are pending; a formal notification will be released 7-10 days prior to scheduled funeral services.
