Last Known Activity

When VT-8 launched from the deck of the Hornet (CV 8) on the morning of June 4, 1942, it was the first time the ensigns in the squadron had ever launched from a deck with a torpedo onboard (or even SEEN it done), and the first time the squadron would launch live torpedoes at ships.  But the pilots were well-trained tactically by Waldron and very confident in his leadership.  Of the 30 pilots and tailgunners in 15 TBDs, only one -- ENS George Gay, USNR -- survived the attack.  VT-8 scored no hits that day, but they relentlessly pressed the attack against impossible odds, and their selfless and supreme sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty, led to the turn of events which brought us victory at Midway.

Other Comments:

". . . If there is only one plane left to make the final run-in, I want that man to go in and get a hit. May God be with us all. Good luck, happy landings, and give 'em hell." -- LCDR Waldron's instructions to VT-8 the night of Jun 3, 1942
