On 25 October 1944, the USS St. Lo (CVE-63), during the Battle of Samar, was part of a small task force of six escort carriers, three destroyers and four destroyer escorts. They became engaged in a battle with a Japanese Task force of four Battleships, eight cruisers and twelve destroyers. Although outnumbered and outgunned by the Japanese, the Americans put up a valiant fight, defeating the Japanese after a four-hour battle. Following their defeat, the Japanese sent waves of Kamikaze aircraft to prevent the Americans from exploiting their victory. The St. Lo was hit by a suicide plane that crashed through her flight deck, mortally wounding the valiant ship.
F2c barber was wounded on October 25 and died of his wounds on October 27. He was buried at sea.
