On August 8, 1945, theĀ USS Astoria was part of the force during the Battle of Savo Island. She was struck by many enemy shells, but kept up the fight until the ability to steer the ship occurred at approximately 0225 the next morning. Fires raged throughout the ship and the injured were gathered on deck. Many of them were successfully transferred to the USS Bagley. From that point on, the crew of the Astoria worked to put out the fires and save their ship. At approximately 1130, the order was given to abandon ship. The Astoria sunk at 1216 on August 9, 1942.
The exact cause of the loss of S2c Abraham is unknown. He was listed as missing in action and later declared dead.
