Woodrow H. Allen survived five major battles at sea in the Pacific including the sinking of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in the South Pacific where he was decorated for bravery. Woodrow was killed almost a year later in an explosion aboard another ship, believed to be the USS Kitty Hawk (AKV-1), near New Georgia Island in the Pacific on 4 Sept. 1943. He was 24.
Wounded on the USS Hornet, October 1942. Killed in action September 1943. The Hornet was awarded 4 Service stars. He may have also received the Presidential Unit Citation as part of Torpedo Squadron 8 operating from U.S.S. Hornet CV-8.
