Just a few months shy of celebrating 20 years in the military, a Middle East deployment was the last thing Petty Officer First Class Ross L. Toles III expected. And, he never expected to go into a war zone. But, for Toles shirking his duty to country was never an option, friends said.
Toles joined the Navy in 1989 right out of high school and had served eight years' active duty and 10 years in the reserves. He was called back into active duty in December and deployed to Afghanistan. Ross died from wounds suffered in a rocket attack in Paktika province, Afghanistan, on June 18th 2008. He was 37 years old.

Bud was my stepdad but I always thought of him as just my dad he had been in my life for as long as I could remember. He would stay up with me if I was sick. He took us to the boat where he did reserves and he always did stuff with us like took us hunting. He was always involved with us in everything we did. Him and my mom bought my first guitar. He was at my wrestling meets and everything. I remember he took me to get my first bow for hunting and he told the man working there that he was so proud of me and that I was a good kid. I miss my dad and I love him. I know he’s watching over me, my brothers, and my mom.
