I was on a boat right next to his when it was mined that morning. We had shared a case of beer with his boat crew the night before. I did not know him real well but will NEVER forget him or his crew. I think about that moment often. We were on our morning patrol to Dong Ha when it happened. That 6/7 ton boat was lifted completely out of the water and flipped upside down on its way down. I recall the only survivor swimming to shore; he had both legs crushed due to the explosion; and the havoc afterward. We remained in the area the rest of the day to cover for divers who recovered the crew and salvaged what they could. The image of the hull protruding from the water is ever etched in my mind. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and the families of the other crew members.
