Bill Roark - USNA Classmate & Friend : Jan 31, 2016
Bill was a Naval Academy classmate and friend. I last saw Bill on board Coral Sea steaming out of Subic Bay in late March or early April 1965. I was aboard Coral Sea for a dental emergency. After the problem was fixed, I was waiting in the wardroom for a helo back to Wiltsie DD716 where I was stationed. Bill happened by. We had a great conversation over coffee.
I did not know until about a year later that Bill had been killed in action. I was very sorry to hear that the navy had lost one of its finest officers and I had lost a friend. It is a fitting tribute to Bill that USS Roark (FF1053) was named in his honor.
