To My Shipmate and Friend
Hello again my old friend. It's been so long since we last met. You stopped by my battalion in Gia Le to say 'Hello' a few days before you died. I'm so glad you did. You were happy and in good spirits. When I heard the sad news I couldn't believe it. We served together at the Navy hospital in Guam, treating patients and Marines coming in from Vietnam. We got orders to Camp Pendleton together, then on to Vietnam in a rush ... not much time to say 'Good bye' to friends or family. Thank you Tom, for being a friend of mine, a person that I can picture still, smiling and cheerful. Thank you for being a great corpsman, for healing wounds, for helping others, and your dedication to the Navy Hospital Corps, and the U.S. Marine Corps. You make all of us proud to have known you. It's a shame we didn't get the chance to have reunions in our old age, or to tell sea stories and laugh at the good times. God must've had something more important for you, and I know you didn't let Him down. We'll have that reunion one of these days soon. I salute you Tom and you will be in my thoughts until we meet again. 'Semper Fi.' Your shipmate, 'Mitch' (Bob Mitchell, Chief Hospital Corpsman (FMF) USNavy Retired).

Run for the Wall 2009
My best friend Paul, I am taking you with me to the wall this year. I am riding in the 21st annual Run For The Wall Motorcycle ride and you are going to hold a place of honor on my bike with me. I was able to find your picture in the 1964 Evergreen year book and I carry it with me always. I have been tending to your grave as often as I can get there and I feel your spirit when I am at that place. You are my hero and will always hold a special place in my heart.

AMERICAN HERO
I remember the High School days when we were all trying to decided what we were going to do with our lives, you and several of your friends decided to join the Navy, as did I. Most of us went to Vietnam, and most of us came home. We honor your memory as one who did not return. I know your love for your country motivated you to serve. Thank you Paul for making America a better place.

Hey Paul, I think of you often along with Greg. Greg and I both joined the Marine Corps right after High School. It was a while before I heard the sad news about your death. It was so hard to comprehend you being gone. And then with Gregs death later on, I signed up for a second tour and was real lucky that I made it back in one piece. I'm a grandpa now and when my granddaughter is old enough to understand she will be told of heroes you all were and what great friends also. Your Buddy Bob

I still miss you.
Hello Paul, I did not hear about your death until I returned from my tour on the USS Mount McKinley. I was there at the same time you were. My mother did not want to tell me while I was still deployed in that awful place. I visited your grave once in Marshdale but could not bring myself to do it a second time. I was able to find your name on the traveling wall when it came to Colorado in the summer of 2007 in Winter Park. I sat and cried for a long time seeing your name there. I still miss you and often look at the Christmas card you sent me that year. It holds a place of honor in my scrap book. You were the best friend I ever had and the world is a far lessor place without you still here. I love you!

Paul was what I knew him by. He was 6 years older than me and I remember looking up to him as kind of an older brother. Although he was listed as being from Evergreen, he acturally lived in a small town called Kitteridge which was 3 miles east of Evergreen down Bear Creek Cyn. Rd. We lived in a small house across from Bear Creek and he lived in a small brown house on the hill just above us. He was older so he did'nt have a lot to say to me as a little kid, but when his peers were'nt around he'd treat me like a little brother. I'll never forget you Paul. I'm 47 and I still remember you. By the way, My wifes brother, Donnie Wood was killed 11 days apart from your death, and is on the same panel 27E, and in the same provence. How about that for fate, brother.Donnie was a young marine from Buford,Ga.Love you bro., Hope your in the hands of Jesus. Just for the record, I served there too, abord an aircraft carrier in the Tonkin gulf.Your not forgotten Paul.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE MOVING WALL". I am a monument to a black period in this countries history.I am the Vietnam wall.,composed to two angled granite walls, inscribed with the names of fifty eight thousand, one hundred thirty four American men and women who died in hell (that was Vietnam) Many people come to see me. strangely they come mostly in silence-old people, young people, children, mothers, fathers, widows, and veterans.all for reasons of their own.they bring gifts, pictures, letters, flowers, poems and cigarettes.the letters speak of grief and loneliness and regret.they ask forgiveness.they are an out pouring of pain.the people softly touch names on my face.they water my grass with tears.then they leave in silence and I hope in peace.for I am more than two stone walls.I am a thank you from a nation that forgot.I am a long past due apology.I am healing for wounds too long left untended.I am a tribute paid to fallen warriors.I AM THE VIETNAM WALL. "America has forgotten the wars.will she remember her warriors"? you may be gone , BUT YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.
