Renner, SD ? Daniel J. Dan Siemonsma, 61, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the Straub Clinic and Hospital in Honolulu, HI.
Visitation will be 12:00 PM Thursday, November 13, 2008 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present from 5:30 PM ? 7:30 PM and a Liturgical Wake Service at 6:30 PM followed by a Rosary. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 14, 2008 at St. Joseph Cathedral with burial to follow in St. Michael Cemetery.
Dan Siemonsma, the son of Joseph and Emma (Kovanda) Siemonsma was born October 27, 1947 in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Baltic High School in 1965. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 5, 1965 and served on active duty until November of 1968.
On June 7, 1969, Dan was united in marriage with Joanne Chiao in Mahanoy City, PA. In September of 1969, Dan went to work for John Morrell and Co. and was employed there as a mechanic. He also continued his Naval career with the Naval Reserves. In June of 1994, Dan retired from the Naval Reserves, attaining the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (Submarine Service).
Dan was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral. He was also very active in the Renner American Legion Post 307, the V.F.W. Post 628, Tri-State Navy Chiefs, and 40/8. Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, and gardening. He even fancied himself a small-time rancher. Dan was a true tinkerer at heart, but his greatest love was for his grandchildren, and the special walks that he shared with them.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Joanne of Renner, SD; his children, Douglas (Bridget) Siemonsma of Swansea, IL, Carla (Chad) Oxender of Sioux Falls; Vance (Sara) Siemonsma of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Kaitlin, Steven, and Rip; his mother, Emma Siemonsma of Sioux Falls; his siblings, Mildred (Richard) Schmidt of Trent, SD, Lloyd (Sue) Siemonsma of Sioux Falls, Ralph (Debbie) Siemonsma of Spearfish, SD, Eva (Kevin Atwater) Siemonsma of Lakewood, CO, Anna (Joe) Rauscher of Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, and a brother, Edwin.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to the American Heart Association.
