Wayne was a LCDR when I first met him. I was a LTJG. I guess he was impressed with my knowledge of the Terrier Missile System and the way I conducted myself as a division officer on the USS Halsey.AN\nyway, I believe he was instumental in getting a new duty station whenever I was due to be transferred.I spent 3+ year at COMMANDER SERVICE FORCE PACIFIC (COMSERVPAC) in Honolulu. Then about 3+ yrs at NAVAL SHIP MISSILE ENGINEERING STATION (NSMES) as a SHIP QUALIFICATION TEAM OFFICER (SQUAT) then as the Department Head of Training for the entire US. From NSMES I was assigned to the USS Norton Sound as the Weapons officer to ovrsee the installation of the test bed for the Aegis Missile System. One of my men fired the first Aegis missile, as a test of the system. The culmination of the firing resulted in a direct hit at about 30 miles. Pretty far in 1973. Wayne went on to be a Rear Admiral (RADM). He as unofficially named " The Father of Aegis" and had one of the Arleigh Burke Class missile ships named after him while he was still alive, that is unusual.
