1982 - Between Thailand and P.I., in the South China Sea, we were attacked by Vietnamese craft, 70 miles south of Con Son Island. A warrant officer was wounded in the chest, in the Ward Room, by a .30 cal. round that pierced the bulkhead.
I spent 4 hours running the high-pressure air compressor in the boiler room...not knowing if a torpedo was gonna rip thru the bulkhead or what.

June 20, 1982 - Destroyers USS Lynde McCormick (DDG 8), USS Turner Joy (DD 951) and the cruiser USS Sterett were fired upon by machine guns from an unidentified vessel after returning from the U.S.-Thai exercise Cobra Gold, '82. McCormick returned fire and the foreign vessel fled without further action.
