Atakapa Pronunciation When the USS Atakapa was commissioned in 1944 Kennith Laird GM1/C was there. He also attended our 2007 USS Atakapa reunion. Kennith said in 1944 Atakapa was pronounced the same as the Indians, (uh-TAK-uh-paw). Some time after that the pronunciation changed to, (AT-uh-KAP-uh).
