NTWS Forums - Your Sounding Board!

What was your best duty station or shipboard assignment and why? What is the recipe for that wonderful dish you make for a holiday or other occasions? Do you have any tips about keeping healthy, or things to watch out for if you have a disease? These are but a few of the topics that are covered by the many Forums on NTWS. These forums provide you, the members, a variety of places to discuss with other members the many topics we have in common.

Those members still on active duty would probably like to know about good assignments when they make out their "dream sheets" or talk to their detailers at BUPERS. Those who have worked as detailers might want to provide a few tips for members in preparing to talk about their next assignment.

If you have a disease like diabetes, what tips can you give others about the disease and things to watch out for with diabetes? Encourage a shipmate on NTWS to keep on top of a health problem so he stays with us for a long time.

These are but a couple of topics that are available for you to offer advice, warn others about, discuss with other NTWS members, or just vent your frustrations about. So check out the many Forums and start a lively discussion about a topic that interests you!

Public can give AAFES Gift Cards

Army & Air Force Exchange Service News

DALLAS -
By simply logging on to a Web site or calling a toll-free number, any American can now give Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) gift cards to military families worldwide.

"We're not even charging to ship these cards," said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jeffry Helm, AAFES' senior enlisted advisor. "Whether the gift card is sent down the street or overseas, shipping is free.

AAFES gift cards can be redeemed at base and post exchanges worldwide by active-duty troops and their families, as well as military retirees.

"With the economy the way it is, now is not the time to haphazardly guess what someone needs to brighten th
eir day or pay extra money for shipping," said Chief Helm. "AAFES gift cards not only eliminate all shipping costs, but also put the power of choice in the hands of the spouse waiting for the return of a loved one, retiree trying to make the best of a turbulent economy, or servicemember far from home.

"All that needs to be sent is a lightweight plastic card that can be redeemed for a movie, phone call home or even gasoline for a much deserved weekend getaway," Chief Helm said.

Besides exchange gift cards, any member of the American public can also send a gift certificate that can be redeemed through the exchange's mail order catalogs or Web site.

"The gift certificates are perfect for Reserve and Guard families that may not live close to a brick and mortar exchange," said Chief Helm.

AAFES gift cards and gift certificates, up to $500, can be sent by any American who calls (877) 770-4438 or logs on to www.aafes.com. Online visitors can click on the "Gift Cards/Certificates for our Troops" link under AAFES Community Connection on the home page.

Gift certificates are sent to individual servicemembers (designated by the purchaser) or distributed to "any servicemember" through the Air Force Aid Society, American Red Cross, Fisher House Foundation Inc., Navy-Marine Corps Relief, the USO or the Soldiers Family Assistance Center.

Stay Connected -- Keep Your E-mail Addresses Current!

There are two ways in which an old friends and Shipmates can contact you via the NTWS website: the first is via your "public" e-mail address displayed in your Personal Details on your Profile Page; and the other is by leaving a message in your Message Center Inbox. The latter triggers an advisory e-mail, sent to your "private" e-mail address to inform you that you have received a message and who it's from.

Your "private" e-mail address, which is the one that TWS uses, is contained in your Account Details at the top of your Profile Page which you can modify at any time. NTWS Members' "private" and "public" e-mail addresses are usually the same. So, please regularly log-in and update any changes to your e-mail addresses both in the Account Detail and Personal Detail sections of your Profile.

FIRST CALL: Notes & Ramblings From The Pilothouse

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, US NAVY!

On Oct. 13 we celebrated the Navy's 233rd birthday throughout the fleet, it's historically relevant that we consider the influence the Great White Fleet's deployment a century ago had on our Navy's development.

President Teddy Roosevelt said back in 1902 that "a good Navy is not a provocation to war. It is the surest guaranty of peace."

His words still hold true today.

The accomplishments of the Great White Fleet has shaped today's Navy and the core capabilities of its maritime strategy. The historic tour of our warships 100 years ago sent a clear message: America is a respected world power, with a strong Navy leading the way. Today the Navy remains an essential element of US power and foreign policy, deployed around the world 24/7, assuring friends, deterring potential adversaries, forging cooperative partnerships to maintain security at sea, and defending our country.

Although the Navy did not have a forward presence in 1907, Teddy Roosevelt envisioned the fleet being utilized for diplomacy and international partnership so he sent a portion of the Atlantic Fleet on a world tour to test naval readiness, establish global presence, generate international goodwill, and garner enthusiasm for the US Navy. With their hulls painted white except for the gilded scrollwork with a red, white, and blue banner on each of their bows, these ships would later come to be known as the Great White Fleet.

Today, the homeporting in Yokosuka, Japan of the carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) as part of the Navy's Forward Deployed Naval Forces, shows America's commitment to peace and security in the region.

Turning back the hands of time again: A tidal wave hit Messina, Sicily in 1908, killing 200,000 people as the Great White Fleet was in Port Said, Egypt. Admiral Charles Sperry dispatched USS Connecticut (BB 18) and USS Illinois (BB 7) to provide assistance and food. In September 2008, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) provided more than 1,400 metric tons of relief supplies and some 30,800 gallons of drinking water to Haiti following string of powerful hurricanes in the Carribean.

A great Navy cannot be built overnight and requires sustained support. Our fleet is strong because of the support of our Sailors, their families, the Congress, and the American public over the past 233 years. As the Navy reflects on its past, we must focus on the future -- committed to continuing our tradition formed in 100 years of global partnerships and security, while promoting global peace and prosperity.

GRATEFUL THANKS

TWS staffer Loyde McIllwayne recently lost his home during Hurricane Ike and the board was buzzing with activity as NTWS members came to his aid. Loyde humbly thanks all members who came to his assistance, and a personal note will be sent to each individual. "I'm still filling out 'Thank You' notes," he said.

AND HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY TO...US!
Can you believe it? We've been around for two years and we're still growing! Ever since our debut on October 27, 2006 we've become the second largest Together We Served military heritage site. Our growth and success is due to your membership and active participation, which we hope you'll continue in the years to come.

If you haven't told a Shipmate about us, isn't it about time you did? And remember the benefits of signing-up new members -- for every five you invite and join through your personal invitation, we'll extend your membership by six months; or consider upgrading to full membership, which is easy on the wallet and very simple to do. See our Membership display in the left column of this edition.

On behalf of the staff and management of NTWS, here's a toast to our second year of being the BEST online site for Shipmates!

Until next time...

Military Uniform Exchange

There is a new website that we think you will be interested in - MilitaryUniformExchange.com.

Anyone who has been discharged from the service knows that you have some uniforms that you will never part with.  However, you likely have many more uniforms that are new or near-new and could be worn by someone else saving who has a need for them.

The purpose of the Military Uniform Exchange is to provide a worldwide site for US Military members to buy and sell (Exchange) secondhand service uniforms and military books. Think of Military Uniform Exchange as a worldwide electronic combination of your local base newspaper classified ads and your local thrift shop. The Military Uniform Exchange exists to serve US Military personnel by providing a platform where they can come together at one location and defray the high cost of new uniform items.

The Military Uniform Exchange also has a Vintage Military Uniforms category for people interested in pre-2001 Military Uniforms (all types) that are collectible or may be of historical value.  (Unlike the other categories a fee is charged for this basic service).

Sellers must create a free account in order to list items for sale using our exchange system. The basic listing service for military uniforms and military books is always free. A fee will be charged to list collectible or historical uniforms.  A seller can elect additional services (provides more exposure for the ad) for a fee. If additional services are purchased, a one-time only fee is charged for that specific service over the specified period of time. There are no additional fees charged, including final value fees, for the duration of that ad unless the seller elects additional services.

Buyers interested in purchasing an item can contact the seller using the "Reply to Ad" button. If a buyer notifies a seller that he is interested or agrees to buy an item listed, the buyer and seller deal directly with each other during the transaction.

Buyers do not need to create a free account, but may do so in order to receive email alerts when something they are interested in is listed for sale on-line.

This site is a great tool for service members to find and sell uniforms on the web.  Please check it out at:  www.MilitaryUniformExchange.com

NTWS Members Tell of Reconnecting with Shipmates

Every day, NTWS reconnects shipmates who've lost contact with each other over the years and miles.

Here's just a sample of what our members have to say about their experiences:

(I've) found numerous people on this website.  People I (was) with in boot camp, A School, and several I was stationed with.  It's good to see where these people are today and what they are doing with their lives.  Discovered that of the engineering officers who (were) stationed with me is the current governor of Missouri, Matt Blunt.  He was an ensign when he came on board fresh out of the academy.  He was a LTJG when I got out.
- OS2 Byron Abadie, veteran

I got out in '81. I ended up reconecting with a couple of good friends that I haven't seen or heard from since then. I even connected with a couple from my old ship's site and got them to join. Thanks NTWS! A few of us are planning a get together in the Norfolk area next summer, to catch up on "old times" and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the commissioning of the Emory S. Land; where we all are Plank Owners.
- HT2 Roy Culver, veteran

I've reconnected with a lot of folks I was stationed with. You know how it usually is, you leave commands and don't keep in contact with old shipmates. Don't know whose brainchild this was, but thanks for thinking about making this site and making it happen!
- ET1 Miriam Lee, veteran

Thirteen years later I found several guys I was stationed with but had lost contact with over the years. We have even got together in the past few months. Great site...that's why I became a lifetime member.
- ET1 Kirk Minckler, retired

Oh Lord, where do I begin? Every once in a while for many years I have been looking for people from my boat with the internet. Once in a very great while I would find a dead link to an unused email address. I found this site pretty much by accident and gave it a try. I found something like 30 people I knew within the first 2 days on here. I've been in constant contact with a bunch of them ever since. About a year after I got out of the Navy, I felt that something was missing, so I joined the Army Guard. After three years of sheer boredom, I got out again. Then for several years, something was missing again. This site brought it back to me. Thank You!!!!
- ABF3 Aric Bergren, veteran

NTWS ROCKS!! NTWS is the greatest. I've connected with so many. Thanks NTWS!
- CTM2 Brian Jones, veteran

Consider upgrading to full membership with NTWS. See our membership announcement in the left column of this issue.

Former POWs Now Eligible for Posthumous Purple Hearts

Story by Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON -
A policy change to expand eligibility for the Purple Heart award to prisoners of war who died in captivity represents the right decision that recognizes their sacrifice, a senior defense official told American Forces Press Service.

The Pentagon announced the new policy earlier this week that will extend criteria for receiving Purple Hearts to prisoners of war who have died in captivity since the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

"The Purple Heart is an award worn with great pride and recognizes that the servicemember has been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action," said Samuel Reterford, the Pentagon?s deputy director of officer personnel management.

The revision maintains the integrity of the award while allowing a reasonable presumption that servicemembers who die in captivity did so as a result of enemy action or complicity, he said.

Reterford noted that the conditions and circumstances of capture and captivity are difficult to document. But unless compelling evidence indicates otherwise, the policy assumes that the death resulted from enemy action or from wounds incurred as a result of enemy action during capture.

The new policy will allow retroactive award of the Purple Heart to qualifying POWs since World War II. This will cover the large number of American POWs who died in captivity during that war, Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Lainez said.

Extension of the Purple Heart to these POWs does not constitute dual recognition for the same act or service, Lainez emphasized.

"The POW Medal recognizes honorable service for members who endure the trials and tribulations associated with being a POW," she said. "The Purple Heart recognizes servicemembers who are wounded or killed in action with the enemy or as a result of enemy action."

Each military department will publish application procedures for retroactive Purple Heart awards. Family members with questions may contact the services directly: Army, 703-325-8700; Navy, 314-592-1150; Air Force, 800-616-3775; Marine Corps, 703-784-9340.

PACFLT Commander Addresses Motorcycle Safety

Story by MC1 Luke J. Perry
Commander, US Pacific Fleet Public Affairs

PEARL HARBOR -
In his latest edition of the "Rat-Pac Report" podcast and blog this month, Admiral Robert F. Willard, Commander, US Pacific Fleet joined Pacific Fleet Master Chief Tom Howard in discussing motorcycle safety and the responsibilities of those who ride such vehicles.

"The Fleet Master Chief and I had a recent discussion regarding motorcycles and the impact that they're having on our Navy," said WIllard. "We recently experienced four Sailor deaths in two weeks due to motorcycle accidents. This has been a particularly bad year for motorcycles and motorcycle safety."

According to Navy Safety Center, personal motor vehicle accidents resulted in 111 deaths in FY2008. Of that, 58 occurred on motorcycles and 51 were on sport bikes. Sport bikes differ from standard motorcycles in that many weigh less than 450 pounds, come with engines 600cc and higher, are tuned for racing and are highly maneuverable.

"We are still not doing our part as Sailors in ensuring we are adhering to the rules and regulations governing this extremely important safety matter," said Master Chief Howard. "If you own a motorcycle of any sort, it is your responsibility to have the proper personal equipment  and the proper training to operate that bike. Whether you ride the bike on base or off, PPE and training are required."

Riders are required to take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation safety course in order to ride on or off base. Additionally, the Navy and Marine Corps have teamed with the Foundation and developed a course tailored specifically for sport bikes. The goal is to reduce the risk of injury and death.

"This is something that we must contain, and you have to help one another do it," said Willard. "I need every Sailor that operates a motorcycle and every Sailor that knows a Sailor that operates a motorcycle, to support one another to ensure that we're adhering to all of the training."

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is a three day course required for all military service members riding a motorcycle on or off base. Military Sport-bike Rider Course (MSRC) is a one-day course designed specifically for all sport bike riders.

For more information on these courses contact your local safety office or visit http://www.safetycenter.navy.mil.

During the presentations, Boston and Bielagus discussed a variety of topics that included the importance of knowing individual credit ratings, the need for savings and investments, and several key elements to developing a personal financial plan.

When asked, Boston explained what he considered to be the most important message that he could relay to today's Sailors.

"I think that right now, given that we are trying to deal with probably one of the most uncertain economies since the Depression that it is important for Sailors to understand that it is a time for them to be concerned but not to panic.

"They should also keep in mind, that even through this recessionary period that there are going to be great opportunities to invest in publicly traded companies, their Thrift Savings Plan, great opportunities for them to buy a home back in the States that they can afford, and great opportunities to go back to school and get an education."

The tour events in Europe were open to all service members, civilian employees and their families, which included a book give-away and a book-signing session.

The tour is slated to visit five more installations in Europe, with stops in Italy at NSA Naples; US Army Garrison Camp Ederle, Vicenza; Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily; Aviano Air Base; and a stop at Naval Station Rota, Spain.

NTWS Membership Growth

Since its launch on Navy Day, October 27, 2006, Sailors from WWII to the present-day, have joined this website. As a result, many Members have reported reconnecting with Shipmates from the past; and as the site continues to grow beyond 300,000 Members by the end of the year, this will be an increasingly common occurrence.

NTWS does not permit public access, and therefore has one of the highest percentages of Navy Members of any Navy community website - as most have been invited by existing NTWS Members. Please help our unique Navy Community continue its strong growth and invite other Sailors that you know.

It's YOUR Money! with Suze Orman

Personal finance expert and motivational speaker Suze Orman created her brand of mega-success by bringing financial planning out of the echelons of millionaires clubs and delivering it to every day people.

Orman frequently takes calls from servicemembers on CNBC's The Suze Orman Show, and has reached out to troops by making speaking appearances at bases and by being involved in the www.militarysaves.com campaign.

Each month, The HOIST will feature a money tip from Orman to help stretch your hard-earned military dollar every payday.

Q: Given that many military people move every two or three years, what advice do you have for buying a home and for keeping it long enough to grow equity?

A: In markets past, yes, you could have bought a home and made a lot of money even if you only had it for one or two years. That's the past.

The present is, you don't buy a home unless you know that you can live in it at least four, five or six years. If you rent it, and that renter doesn't pay, you have to cover that.

The issue is, do you have enough money saved that if you buy the home and are relocated, and you can't sell your home or you have to sell it for less than your loan is for, then you absorb that cost? If you keep getting relocated, what are you going to do? The best thing is to just rent.

For military members who bought their homes years ago, it made sense. But the economy is different now. Everything is expensive. The advice you're reading today is the advice for today. In today's economy, with expenses skyrocketing and property taxes going up, unless you have a serious sum of money, you should be renting.

VA Establishes Waiting List for Washington Crossing National Cemetery

WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is accepting applications for interment of deceased military veterans and deceased eligible family members at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery being developed in Bucks County, Pa.

The first phase of construction for the 205-acre cemetery near Washington Crossing Historic Park is expected to start next spring, with burials expected to begin in late 2009.

Families who are temporarily keeping the remains of loved ones in cremation urns or in other cemeteries should call the National Cemetery Scheduling Office in St. Louis at (800) 535-1117 for more information.  The office is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Central Time.

When complete, the first construction phase will consist of approximately 60 acres and include facilities needed to provide burials for approximately 10 years.

More than 580,000 veterans live in the region served by the new facility.  Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, the nearest open national cemetery in Pennsylvania, is 120 miles from the new cemetery site.

Veterans with a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable, their spouses and dependent children are eligible for burial in any national cemetery with burial space.  Other burial benefits for eligible veterans include a burial flag, a Presidential Memorial Certificate and a government headstone or marker – even if they are not buried in a national cemetery.

In the midst of the largest expansion since the Civil War, VA operates 125 national cemeteries in 39 states and Puerto Rico, as well as 33 soldiers' lots and monument sites.  More than 3.4 million Americans, including veterans of every war and conflict -- from the Revolutionary War to the current Global War on Terror -- are buried in VA’s national cemeteries.

OFF DUTY: A Musical Tribute to America's Veterans

A dazzling, star-studded musical tribute will honor America's bravest on PBS and AFN this Veterans Day.

Led by The United States Air Force Band and Orchestra, the program features two-time Grammy Award-winning legend Patti LaBelle, country superstar Clint Black and genre-bending ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. Joined by Academy Award-winning actor Cliff Robertson, the one-hour patriotic special will raise the hair on the back on your neck, and leave you shouting for more.
Hawaii's Jake Shimabukuro, sometimes called "the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele" lets loose with the US Air Force Band and Orchestra during the taping of "America's Veterans: A Musical Tribute.

The Veterans Day special was recorded in high definition at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda, MD, and is dedicated to our military heroes from operations spanning five wars and all branches of the armed forces.

"It's so nice to be here singing for the veterans, singing for our Soldiers who are fighting -- the young men and women who are trying to keep it real wherever they are," said rhythm and blues legend Patti LaBelle, who sings "I'll Stand By You" during the performance.

Singer-songwriter Clint Black, joined LaBelle in expressing his deep gratitude for the selfless sacrifices military men and women offer daily in defense of liberty.

"We owe so much thanks to so many of you in uniform and those veterans who have given us so much freedom to enjoy," said Black, who sings "The Shoes You're Wearing" in the broadcast.

Hawaii ukulele virtuoso, Jake Shimabukuro, played classical to rock compositions on his ukulele for the show, including George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

The program also features short vignettes delivered by Cliff Robertson honoring veteran heroes from all five branches of the military. Each featured veteran is recognized on camera after their segment is presented.

The program will air on PBS affiliates in the US on Nov. 10, and broadcast on American Forces Network Prime on Nov. 11 for servicemembers and their families stationed overseas. Check local listings for actual dates and times in your area.

The program is presented in partnership with Maryland Public Television, Soldiers Radio and TV, and was made possible in part by Booz Allen Hamilton.
